How We Talk About Risk At our clinic, your safety, understanding, and confidence in any treatment are our top priorities. That’s why we take time to explain not just what a treatment involves, but also what the risks are—clearly, honestly, and in a way that makes sense to you. Why Is This So Important? UK law (specifically the Montgomery ruling, 2015) says that every patient has the right to understand any material risks that might affect their decision about treatment. That means we’ll talk with you not just about general risks, but about any risks that might be especially important to you—based on your goals, your lifestyle, or your health history. We Keep It Clear and Straightforward We know that medical information can sometimes feel overwhelming. Most people in the UK read and understand best when things are explained simply, and that’s how we’ll speak with you—avoiding unnecessary medical jargon and using everyday language. We also use pictures, written guides, and even analogies to help explain things clearly. Instead of saying “vascular occlusion,” we’ll explain: “There’s a rare but serious risk that filler could block a blood vessel. If this happens, it can cause pain, skin damage, or in very rare cases, even affect vision. We’re trained to recognise this quickly and treat it immediately if needed.” Or: “There’s a small chance you could have numbness or tingling in the area we treat—usually temporary, but we’ll talk about what to expect and what to do if it doesn’t improve.” You’ll Never Be Rushed We want you to have space to think things through. You’ll always have time to ask questions, consider your options, and reflect on what’s right for you. In fact, for many treatments, we recommend a cooling-off period between your consultation and your procedure so you can make a fully informed decision, without pressure. We Personalise the Conversation Risks can mean different things to different people. That’s why we always tailor the conversation to your individual circumstances. We’ll talk about how a treatment may affect your appearance, recovery time, work, social life, or emotional wellbeing. We’ll also let you know what to look out for afterwards—and what support is available if you need it. Written Information and Aftercare We’ll give you clear, written information to take home so you can re-read everything we’ve discussed, share it with others if you like, and feel confident in your decision. You’ll also receive full aftercare guidance, and we’ll be here to answer any questions at any point before or after your treatment. Our Promise to You We believe that understanding risk isn’t about scaring you—it’s about empowering you to make the choice that’s right for you, with all the facts and support you need. If you’d like to talk about a treatment, ask questions, or just learn more, you’re always welcome to get in touch for a consultation. Our Approach to Psychological Wellbeing in Aesthetic Treatment At our clinic, we believe that aesthetic treatments should enhance not only your appearance but also your confidence and overall wellbeing. That’s why we take great care to understand the emotional, psychological, and personal motivations behind every treatment request. Our goal is to ensure that you feel supported, informed, and empowered throughout your journey. Psychological Assessment: A Key Part of Your Consultation Before any procedure, we take time to explore both physical concerns and psychosocial goals. During your consultation, we may ask: • What do you dislike about the area you’re seeking treatment for? • What changes are you hoping to see? • What problems do you feel this feature causes in your life? • How do you think your life will be different if the feature is changed? We also use simple screening questions—based on NICE guidelines for Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD)—to help us understand whether cosmetic treatment is the right option for you at this time. In some cases, we may use structured tools, such as the Cosmetic Procedures Screening Questionnaire (COPS), to further guide our decision-making. This approach is not about judging your desire for change. Rather, it’s about making sure we are meeting your needs in a way that is safe, supportive, and genuinely beneficial in the long term. Creating a Safe and Supportive Pathway We’ve established a psychological pathway in our practice to ensure you receive the right support if any concerns arise during consultation. This may involve: • Liaising with your GP or mental health professional • Offering a staged approach (e.g. using short-acting treatments before considering longer-lasting options) • Referring for psychological support before making a final decision Many patients benefit from this thoughtful approach. When We Say No – And Why Sometimes, we may advise against a procedure—either temporarily or permanently. This decision is always made with care, respect, and your wellbeing in mind. If we feel that a treatment is unlikely to meet your expectations or if there are signs that psychological support may be needed first, we will explain this clearly and compassionately. We may say: “From our discussion and assessment, I’m concerned that surgery may not give you the outcome you’re hoping for right now. It’s important to me that any treatment we consider is likely to benefit you both physically and emotionally. Based on what we’ve talked about, I believe taking more time—or speaking with a mental health professional—would be in your best interest before going further.” We will always offer guidance, support, and, where appropriate, recommend trusted professionals who can help. Saying no is never about refusal—it’s about responsibility, integrity, and our commitment to doing what is truly best for you.
