Hair loss can be distressing for both men and women, particularly when thinning begins at a younger age.
While medications such as finasteride have historically been used to slow androgenetic hair loss, increasing awareness of potential side effects has led many patients to seek non-tablet alternatives.
In the UK, the recent Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) safety communications regarding oral finasteride have prompted greater discussion around mood changes, sexual dysfunction, and psychological side effects in some patients, particularly younger men. As a result, many individuals are now exploring regenerative hair restoration treatments that do not involve systemic hormone-altering medication.
I offer evidence-based regenerative approaches to hair restoration using microneedling, platelet-rich plasma (PRP), and polynucleotide therapy. These treatments aim to stimulate the scalp environment, improve blood supply, support follicular health, and encourage thicker, healthier hair growth in suitable patients. They are particularly useful in early to moderate thinning where hair follicles remain present but are becoming miniaturised.
Microneedling works by creating controlled micro-injuries within the scalp, stimulating collagen production, growth factors, and regenerative pathways involved in follicular activity. PRP therapy involves concentrating platelets from a small blood sample before carefully introducing these growth factors back into the scalp. Research suggests that combining microneedling with PRP may produce greater improvements in hair density and thickness than either treatment alone, particularly in androgenetic alopecia.
Polynucleotide treatment is a newer regenerative option increasingly used in aesthetic medicine and hair restoration. Polynucleotides are thought to support tissue repair, hydration, angiogenesis, and scalp quality. Although the scientific evidence for polynucleotides in hair loss remains less mature than PRP, many patients seek them as part of a broader regenerative strategy, particularly when wishing to avoid oral medications.
These treatments are not equivalent to a hair transplant and results vary between individuals. The best outcomes are typically seen in patients with early thinning, diffuse loss, or miniaturising hairs rather than completely bald scalp. A consultation allows assessment of the pattern of hair loss, scalp health, medical history, and suitability for regenerative treatment options.
My philosophy is to provide honest, medically grounded advice tailored to the individual patient. For some patients, regenerative treatments may form part of a wider hair restoration plan alongside topical therapies, scalp optimisation, nutritional support, and lifestyle measures aimed at maintaining long-term follicular health.
Man Botox for forehead lines and frown lines can help to make you look less haggard and grumpy!
Too sweaty? Botox in the forehead or arm pits will help to reduce copious sweaters in these areas.
Dull skin? Or aged from years of ignoring requests to put on suncream or moisturiser?
Profhilo and polynucleotides can help here, substantially, by injecting tiny volumes of moisture inducing and collagen forming peptides.
Perhaps too far down the line?
Well think about PRX-T33 or CO2 laser instead - a few days of redness and a weeks total downtime is what to realistically expect.
Yes you can slow hair loss!
Medication sprays require at least 0.25% of topical finasteride plus minoxidil daily
PRP injections show variable responses, but when combined with microfat transfer the boosting effect of dormant hair follicles in the telegen phase can be quite profound.
After a simpler solution?
Consider Nucleofill hair - a polynucleotide that as an injectable biostimulator (formulated by bonding synthetic chains of nucleotides that are the building blocks of DNA that play a vital role in cell repair) that revitalises dormant hair follicles to stimulate them to cause the hair to grow and for the scalp or skin in the area to become stronger.
Regenera Activa is novel way of both slowing hair loss and promoting the regrowth of lost hair. Being more minimally invasive and less costly compared to a hair transplant, with the benefit of fewer risks and less down time.
Regenera Activa is a worldwide company that delivers the technology on which the Autologous Micrografting Technology® (AMT®) procedures are based.
A few small samples of skin are taken from behind the ear in the hair bearing scalp that are used to make a regenerative liquid cocktail that is then injected into the area of hair thinning to help spur the follicles into life. If you‘ve heard of PRP, its a bit like that, but on steroids 💪🏽
One extra thing to consider is scalp micropigmentation (SMP) - offered by colleagues oif mine at both Cheshire Lasers and St Michael's, this non permanent solution will last around 5 years, and can used for older strip (FUT) hair transplant scars, or as an adjunct to other procedures such as those above, or after FUE where scalp coverage rather than density has been sought.
Please note
Not all hair loss in men is androgenic allopecia
This requires... a history of the hair loss (thinning AGA/ FPHL), hair shedding (TE) or hair breakage perhaps utilising the 50 pull test (chemical, trichotillomania, anagen effluvium)
... as well as examination (patches AA/LP/LED, TM, pattern AGA/TA/FFA or diffuse loss (TE, AE, AGA, AA, systemic)
... plus dermatoscopy of non scarring (yellow / black dots, exclamation mark or corkscrew hairs) or scarring (white dots, perifollicular oedema, keratin plugs, peripilar casts) areas
In my specialist practice, treatment options like hyfrecation, laser therapy and cryotherapy are commonly used to remove skin lesions like warts, Fordyce spots, pearly papules and skin tags.

Why Regenera Activa? What is AMT® ?
Regenera Activa is the only distributor of the Rigenera® technology, now present in more than 60 countries, with doctors using it in more than 250,000 procedures.
AMT® is a simple procedure that transfers the regenerative and self-healing potential of the body to where it is most needed. The procedure involves medical devices specifically intended to obtain a micrograft solution from small biopsies. This micrograft solution contains different cell types, including progenitor and multipotent stem cells, that will act to regenerate the normal function of an autologous and homologous impaired tissue. As the processed biopsies are minimally manipulated and come from the patient themselves, AMT® is considered a minimally invasive and highly safe procedure.
Alternatively, polynucleotides (Nucleofill Hair) can be used separately or together to help to promote hair re-growth.
